Myxomatózis

The natural hosts are tapeti (Sylvilagus brasiliensis) in South and Central America, and brush rabbits (Sylvilagus bachmani) in North America. In some countries, it has been used as a way of reducing the number of wild rabbits. The disease remains a risk today, to both wild and pet rabbits.


Sadly, it nearly always causes death. Vaccinating your rabbits is the best way to protect them against myxomatosis.

Vaccinated rabbits can still catch myxomatosis but they have a better chance of surviving the disease (with treatment from your vet). The virus causes swelling and discharge from the eyes, nose and anogenital region of infected rabbits. What is myxomatosis ? It is usually transmitted by insects and is usually fatal. When I looked around the internet there was surprisingly little about the disease and its cruel effects on wild and domestic rabbits.

Myxomatosis , sometimes referred to as myxi , is a serious condition that can appear with several different kinds of symptoms in pet rabbits. Californian myxoma virus is found on the west coast of the USA, the Baja peninsula of Mexico, and the southwest coast of Canada. Myxoma virus is a poxvirus in the genus Leporipoxvirus.


Clinical signs depend on the virulence of the viral strain and on the genus and species of the infected rabbit. Myxomatosis , formally infectious myxomatosis , or myxomatosis cuniculi, a highly fatal infectious viral disease of rabbits. It is characterized by fever, swelling of the mucous membranes, and the presence of nodular skin tumours.

Usually a vet will put it to sleep, this puts its misery to an end and also stops the infection spreading further in the wild.
